Summary:Adam and eve is story of creation of mankind by God and their failure to obey the commandment of god thus causing them to be cast away from the garden of eden. But then God has taken in hand the work to restore them back through the seed of the woman. It is also a clear gospel of the fall of man and god’s provision to restore them back by shedding of the blood.
Beginning: Adam and eve are the parents of entire human race and were directly created by God therefore were the Sons of God, like the Angels. We all are not direct creations but are the children of Adam and therefore inherit all the good and the bad that came from him including Sin, and are now short of the glory of god. Now lets deep dive into this wonderful story written in the bible book of genesis.
Scriptures: Story of Adam and Eve in the bible
Genesis 1 In God’s image: God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Genesis 2 Creation of Adam and Eve
Creation of Adam: LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Creation of Eve: And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 3 Temptation of Eve and the fall of adam and eve
Temptation of Eve: Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Immediate Guilt: And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Curse on mankind: And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Sin Covering: Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Genesis 4 Children of adam and eve
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Genesis 5 summary: This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.
Now lets deep dive and understand the scriptures.
Genesis of Adam and Eve
Adam: Adam was the first man created by Elohim from the dust of the ground and then god breathed into his nostrils and he became a living soul. The name Adam is derived from the Hebrew noun adamah meaning “the ground” or “earth” thus “Son of the red earth”. In general context Hebrew of Adam name implies Man. Through his seed human beings are created.
Adam was created and then put in the garden of Eden by God to dress it and to keep it. It was his primary duty to maintain it. The Lord commanded him to take fruit of the any tree of the garden to eat except from the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. This is well known as the Forbidden fruit. Incase he eats the consequence of that was also told him, that dying you shall die in a process of time. Until this time eve was not yet created. God also brought forth creatures of the field so that adam seeing them would name them. Now practically this must have went on for long time until he felt alone, no one to share his natural emotions and expressions as none of them matched him to understand or share him. Thus Eve was created.
Eve: The Lord God caused Adam to go into deep sleep and took a rib(original form is from a Side, not exactly Rib; Just like from side of Jesus Church was born) from Adam’s side and created Eve. Thus Eve was created by God from the Adam and was the flesh of his flesh and the bone of his bone. Hence they are one body and a Man leaves everything for her. The name Eve means life which can be interpreted for her as Mother or Giver of Life to all mankind.
Now overtime they must have done the job of tendering the garden and living life together with God visiting them during the evenings. Both of them were naked but were not ashamed. Mention of this means it was literal. Even animal and small children are naked and not ashamed in their innocent states. They realize about it only after eating the forbidden fruit and became self aware. Some scholars suggest glory on them hides their nakedness from others, which could be true. Also there was no mention of having children during this time. So there is something more but that would not be known yet.
Garden of Eden
Lord God planted a garden eastward in eden. In that garden he made out of the ground to grow trees that pleasant to sight and good for food. That included both trees: the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. So that answers the question why did god made the forbidden tree? as he created many trees and it wasn’t with that intention. Also others speculate that it was apple but there is no evidence to prove or even suggest that. Also it is impossible to find out too as the garden is no longer accessible.
Forbidden fruit: In Genesis 2:16-17 Lord God commanded Adam saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat, But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die(meaning slowly dying you shall die). So Adam was innocent like a baby without knowing what is it to do good and evil by self will. He had self will but was limited as it lacked the knowledge of distinction perspective (eye to discern) (the ability to do that which is profitable only to self). Now the same commandment he had taught to Eve but modified overtime with experience.
The fall and the curse
Temptation of Eve: Serpent (here means the shining one) had cunning skills during the creation. Now Satan guiding the Serpent on what to talk using the cunning skill of it deceived Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Serpent tempted her using
- Lie: it deceived Eve to misunderstand and misinterpret the command of the Lord. Then to disbelieve, that they would not die. Faith is broken and the word of god which is the sword of the spirit is now cast away. Post then it was just leading Eve to follow her own lusts to finish the temptation.
- the lust of the eye: the fruit looked pleasant to her eyes
- the lust of the flesh: and desirable to be eaten
- the pride of life: and was good to make one wise.
Fall of Adam: Adam was the one commanded by Lord God to not to partake of the fruit. He had taught the same to eve too. But by now she had eaten falling to the temptation. Now she gave it to adam too and he eats too. Bible does not mention if there was any talk between them. All we know is that he ate too. Many derive various interpretation from this:
- Adam ate the fruit willfully as paul mentions in letter to Timothy that Eve was deceived.
- The Act of Adam shows that indeed they are one flesh and one disobedience is equivalent of both. Also shows the strength of the bond between husband and wife where husband would die for her wife or his own Body. And we are the Body of Christ.
The Curse: God pronounced curses on each individuals who were involved in this whole act of disobeying the command of the Lord and who created such situation too.
- Literal Serpent: Snake was cursed to walk on belly all the days of its life.
- Satan: The voice behind the serpent was the satan. Satan had devised this whole plan and he was cursed that he would eat dust all the days of his life (dust = man). Now Satan’s desire and lust is to destroy mankind. Also a war: I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed. It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel (talking about Christ who will be killed but will destroy the Satan).
- Woman: I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. Now Eve is exposed to the harsh reality of the world and her full caretaker has become the Man., he is place above her and she will keep trying to please him.
- Man: Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Out of Garden: Now the Lord did not wanted them to live forever in this fallen state therefore drove them out of the Garden of Eden as it had the Tree of Life, whose fruit if they ate, they would have lived forever (as he had already become cunning and self aware by now). But he did not drew away from them as we still see that the Lord by shedding of blood, covers their Sin. Next he sets a flaming sword and Cherubims to protect the Tree of life. To protect from whom? From Satan, the Cherubim and fire to keep him away as the authority of this world is now Satan’s, who took it away from Adam.
Family tree of Adam and Eve
Bible mentions in Gen 5:4 that Adam begat many sons and daughters. That answer where Cain got his wife. The Story in the bible is focused on the lineage by which Christ will come forth and some important learnings that Holy Spirit, the writer of the bible wants to mention. Therefore in Genesis Cain, Abel and Seth are mentioned by name as Children of Adam and Eve, with their stories. Luke’s lineage of Jesus provides the full family tree of jesus linking all the way back to Adam.
